I Wonder

I wonder
If my role here
Is to sacrifice myself
For others

No one
Gets out alive
So why not give
What I have?

Perhaps
In doing so
I’d find
My purpose

Flee

All it takes
For me to flee
Is a sharp look
From you
Directed at me

Dad

What thoughts
Are confined
In the vault
Of your mind?

Why
Don’t you speak
And share
What you think?

I don’t know
Who you are
Beyond what
I can see

And what I can see
Is that you
Clearly
Have no time for me

escape their fate

souls entwined
with a desire
to escape their fate

ancestors
collectively mourning
lost childhoods

disparate people
drawn together
by shared suffering

stumbling
forward
into a new life

fleeing their pasts
unwittingly creating
their futures

they know
what not to do
but not what to do

attempting to avoid
the same mistakes
their parents made

desperately praying
for their children
to escape their fate

years on repeat

huddled
in a corner
years
on repeat
every minute

Without

Without hope
My inner compass breaks

Without faith
I can’t find it

Without love
I don’t have anywhere to go

Those Few Words

Those few words
Gave voice
To the silence
I always knew
Was there

The Love That’s Real

The love I feel
So impossibly real

The love that’s real
So impossible to feel

A point of reality
Against a bleak totality

A bleak totality
Devoid of reality

A pinprick of light
That illuminates the night

A dark night
Pricked with terror and flight

A whispered prayer
Promising a truth and a dare

A violent glare
Promising pain and a scare

A look and a touch
That’s never too much

A look and a touch
That’s always too much

A lifetime together
Souls entwined forever

A lifetime together
Souls enmeshed forever

They See

I get more solace
In a day
From strangers online
Than you’ve given me
In a lifetime

They ask
They listen
They see

You just speak

Holding me
To higher standards
Than you hold yourself

Judging me
For acting
How you act

Hating me
For being
Who I am

The Devil Speaks

The devil speaks
With the voice
Of those
I love

Whispering
Half truths
Whispering
Lies

I cannot
Always
Tell
Them apart

So
I hurt
The very people
I wanted to save

The silence
Was broken

Mere Thought

Isn’t it fascinating
Just how much
A mere thought
Can derail
An otherwise perfect day?

Running

I’ve been running
For so long
That I’ve forgotten
What scared me
In the first place

Questions

How
Can I mourn
The person
You didn’t allow me
To become?

Why
Do I
Keep believing
You’d want
To help me?

What
Would it take
To show you
That
I am
More lost
Than ever?

When
Will I feel
The love
You say
You have
For me?

Where
Are you
Now that you’ve
Left
Your marks
All over me?

Who
Am I
To deserve
These questions
Answered?

Need

I can’t tell you
What I need
Because what I need
Is for you
To know
Without needing to be told

Lost To Time

Anguish dissipates
At the sight
Of my young son’s smile
Despite knowing
That he too
Will be forgotten
Lost to time
Almost as soon as I am
Yet here and now
There is joy
A small light
Illuminating the crushing darkness

If I Were

If I were
To let go of my pain
Who would mourn
The future
I was never able
To have?

Forgotten

Eventually
The day will come
When
You are thought of
For the last time

When
All evidence
Of your existence
Has vanished

When
Even your descendants
Have forgotten
Your name

When
Every atom
Of your body
Has been recycled

Then
All that will persist
Of you
Will be the subtle impact
Of your brief touch
Upon the collective consciousness
Of humanity

Closure

Sometimes
I fear
That I didn’t leave sooner
Because I wanted to know
Why
Because I couldn’t bare
To be alone with my thoughts
Attempting to justify
My decision
To put myself first
By cutting you out
I also cut myself off
From any closure
You could possibly provide

Vestiges Of Civilisation

What terrifies me
More than anything
Is the realization of
How little
It would take
For all vestiges of civilization
To fall away

When naked and afraid
When hungry and alone
Man becomes beast
Either attacking for resources
Or attacking to defend them

Tell me
What wouldn’t you do to survive?

Tell me
What makes you different from a savage
Other than the happenstance of your birth?

Tell me
Why you think you are saintly enough
To act any different?

I am terrified
Because I know what I will do
If pushed
